Cold Weather Tips For Your Pet

Cold Weather Safety Tips From Our Columbus Veterinarian

It's no secret that temperatures can drop dangerously low in Columbus during the winter months.  And if it's too cold for you to be outside for an extended period of time, the same applies to your pets. This time of year, our Columbus veterinarian at Hamilton Road Animal Hospital always likes to remind pet owners of some basic cold weather safety tips for pets of all sizes.

Cold Weather Safety Tips for Pets

If you have a cat who likes to spend time outdoors, try to keep your cat inside on days when temperatures drop below freezing. Even on days when temperatures hover around the freezing mark, outdoor cats should have access to covered shelter at all times.

Dogs should never be left outside for extended periods of time when temperatures drop below the freezing point. Even dogs with multiple layers of fur (such as Huskies) can freeze to death when temperatures are cold enough; an undercoat or heavy coat is not enough to protect your dog from frigid temperatures.

Always be on the lookout for signs of cold-related medical problems in your pets after they've come inside; this includes hypothermia. Some of the most common symptoms of hypothermia include lethargy, a low heart rate, shivering, and dilated pupils. Seek medical attention immediately if your pet shows any of these troubling symptoms.

If you see a neighbor leave a pet outdoors for extended periods of time when temperatures are below freezing, don't hesitate to contact animal control. This could be the difference between life and death for a pet who is suffering in the cold.

Testimonials

Read What Our Clients Say

Wow! Thanks to all the staff at Anderson Vet Clinic. I feel like you all truly love what you do! My kitty, Lola and I always have such a pleasant experience when we come in. Fortunately, it’s usually just for a check-up, but I would not leave Lola in anyone else’s hands but yours. Thank you for your caring commitment!

I have benefited tremendously from the care my pet received from Dr. Anderson.

John Doe / San Diego, CA

Fabio wasn’t eating the food I was giving him and I didn’t feel he was getting the nutrition he needed. Thanks to Dr. Anderson, he evaluated Fabio and his current diet to make some recommendations and now Fabio has gone from barely eating to finishing his meals and he looks healthier than ever. You clearly are an expert in your field...thanks so much!
