Why Are Vaccines Necessary for Cats?

Keeping your cat up-to-date on all necessary vaccinations is extremely important in keeping your cat healthy. Furthermore, many boarding facilities and pet day care facilities will require your cat to be up-to-date on all vaccines in order to provide you with their services.

How Do Feline Vaccinations Work?

Feline vaccinations work by introducing a very small amount of the modified virus, disease, or illness (known as an antigen) into your pet's body. The purpose of this is to allow your pet to build up antibodies against that particular disease or illness. This way, if they are exposed to it in the future, their bodies will be able to fight that disease or virus off without contracting it.

Core Vaccination Recommendations from Veterinarians

Core vaccinations for cats are those that are highly recommended (and in some cases, required) for your cat. These include:

  • Rabies - a deadly disease that can be transmitted to unvaccinated animals and even humans
  • Feline Distemper (Panleukopenia) - a virus that attacks a cat's nervous, digestive, and respiratory system and is often fatal if untreated.
  • Feline Calicivirus - one of the most common viruses in cats, this virus attacks the respiratory system and can lead to breathing problems.
  • Feline Rhinotracheitis – a feline herpes type virus, which also attacks the respiratory system
  • Feline Leukemia – a viral infection which attacks a cat’s immune system and has a high mortality rate.

Non-Core Vaccination Recommendations for Cats

Non-core vaccinations are recommended on a case-by-case basis depending on your cat's risk factors. Potential non-core vaccines that your veterinarian could recommend include:

  • Feline Immunodeficiency Virus (Feline AIDS) – a viral infection that can weaken the immune system.
  • Feline Bordetella - a contagious respiratory disease similar to kennel cough in dogs.

More Preventive Veterinary Care for Your Cat with Our Columbus Animal Hospital

Another important thing to consider and talk to our Columbus veterinarians about is whether or not your cat needs protection against fleas, ticks, and other parasites. In general, this is highly recommended for cats that spend any amount of time outdoors, as the risk is very high in outdoor pets. Furthermore, even if your cat is a strictly indoor pet, additional protection against fleas, ticks, and parasites may be recommended by our veterinarians if you have a dog or other pet which goes in and out of the house.

Ultimately, the best way to determine how to best protect your cat is to have a conversation with our veterinarians about your pet’s risks factors and which parasites it may be exposed to.
