Pet Safety During the Holidays
When holidays roll around, many people take time to celebrate. If you are a pet owner, there are risks to keep in mind during the holidays. If your dog or cat does require emergency care, contact Hamilton Road Animal Hospital in Columbus to make an appointment with one of our veterinarians. Here are some steps to take during the holidays to help avoid a trip to an animal emergency hospital.
Keep a Watchful Eye on Food Preparation and Serving
During the holidays, there is usually a focus on the food people enjoy together. Unfortunately, dogs and cats could become sick if they have access to foods they normally do not eat. Even food that does not usually present a problem to pets could become a hazard if it is eaten in excess. Keep pets out of the kitchen or away from grilling equipment so accidental burns do not occur. It is best to have your pets in an area away from dining areas when food is served to our guests and family members.
Make Sure Ornaments Are Not Hazards to Pets
Ornaments are used as a celebratory means, but they could be hazardous to pets. Before hanging ornaments, make sure there are no sharp protrusions, rough edges, or pointed areas that could cause a puncture wound. Hang ornamental decorations in areas where pets are unable to access them if possible. If you are using lights, it is best to keep them high from the ground as wires could be bitten, causing electrocution. Ornaments with ribbons or strings hanging from them are also hazardous.
Ensure Plants Around Pets Are Not Poisonous
Pets are naturally curious when it comes to plants. Dogs enjoy digging in the dirt around plants while cats will eat the leaves of holiday plants. There are plants, however, that are associated with the holidays, such as Poinsettias, that are hazardous to pets if ingested. Keep plants away from pets completely if you are unsure about their toxicity.
