Teeth Cleaning

Regularly brushing your dog or cat's teeth can help your pet to have good dental health and show off their pearly whites. It is important to note that any pet can have the same dental problems as people do and painful mouths can be avoided with proper dental care. At Hamilton Road Animal Hospital in Columbus, OH, our dedicated team will help you keep your pet's teeth in great shape with annual dental exams and teeth cleanings.

The Signs of Teeth and Mouth Problems

Your pet can have tooth pain because of infected or swollen gums, broken teeth, or tartar build-up. Dogs and cats show pain in different manners but some of the common indicators of dental problems include unusual drooling, loss of appetite, and bad breath in dogs. Your pet may chew on only one side of his mouth or you may notice swelling around the mouth or lesions on the gums. All of these signs indicate that your pet needs a veterinary care visit to identify the underlying causes.

Performing Pet Dental Care

Brushing your dog or cat's teeth regularly at home will help to keep infections at bay. Remember to only use pet toothpaste because they can swallow it and it doesn't foam up like human toothpaste, which can cause a choking hazard in pets. When at-home dental care isn’t enough, it’s time to schedule an appointment for dental care with one of our veterinarians.

After an oral exam, our veterinarian may determine that an extensive dental cleaning is needed instead of just simple brushing. Your pet will be under general anesthesia so that he can remain still for his teeth cleaning. The process of cleaning the teeth can take a while, and pets can get impatient or if they are in pain, they may become irritable, so anesthesia is needed. Each tooth is cleaned and examined individually. For pet dental care, all plaque and tartar are removed from the exposed parts of the teeth and below the gum line using hand and ultrasonic scalers. Then the teeth are polished to remove any tiny scratches that remain from scaling. This reduces the rate of subsequent plaque build-up.
