Treats Your Pet CANNOT Enjoy on Halloween

Treats Your Pet CANNOT Enjoy on Halloween in Columbus OH

It’s tempting for pet owners in Columbus to share Halloween candy with their animal friends. Unfortunately, many types of Halloween candy are not safe for pets. Knowing which types of treats can be especially toxic can help you keep your pet safe at the holiday. While there is often overlap between what will poison cats and what will poison dogs, there can be some difference between the two. Familiarizing yourself with the appropriate list for your pet is important.

Treats That Harm or Poison Dogs

These foods (and others) can harm dogs that eat them. If your pet eats any one of these foods, contact your pet's veterinarian to decide whether or not your pet is in danger.

  • Milk chocolate.
  • Baker's chocolate.
  • Raisins and raisins covered in chocolate.
  • Sugarless candies containing Xylitol

All of the above candies are poisonous to dogs and should be reported to the veterinarian if they are consumed. In addition, candy wrappers can cause your dog to choke or develop an intestinal blockage.

Treats That Harm or Poison Cats

These treats can cause problems for cats ranging from temporary illness to death.

  • Baker's chocolate.
  • Milk chocolate.
  • Candies containing Xylitol.
  • Milk-based candies.
  • Raisins.

Cats can also be harmed by eating candy wrappers, and they can choke on small hard candies.

Tips to Protect Your Dog or Cat

You can protect your dog or cat by keeping your Halloween candy in the freezer, teaching your children not to share Halloween candy with your pet, and by keeping your pet full and satisfied with healthy pet food on Halloween night. If you notice your pet getting ill on Halloween (vomiting, diarrhea, difficulty breathing, lethargy and other symptoms), contact your pet's Columbus vet right away.

Testimonials

Read What Our Clients Say

Wow! Thanks to all the staff at Anderson Vet Clinic. I feel like you all truly love what you do! My kitty, Lola and I always have such a pleasant experience when we come in. Fortunately, it’s usually just for a check-up, but I would not leave Lola in anyone else’s hands but yours. Thank you for your caring commitment!

Maya Smith / Los Angeles, CA

I have benefited tremendously from the care my pet received from Dr. Anderson.

John Doe / San Diego, CA

Fabio wasn’t eating the food I was giving him and I didn’t feel he was getting the nutrition he needed. Thanks to Dr. Anderson, he evaluated Fabio and his current diet to make some recommendations and now Fabio has gone from barely eating to finishing his meals and he looks healthier than ever. You clearly are an expert in your field...thanks so much!
