How to Adopt a Healthy Cat
Adopting a cat from an animal shelter is a wonderful way to support animal rescue organizations. That being said, animal shelters may not always know a pet's past. When searching for a new cat at a shelter, Hamilton Road Animal Hospital recommends following these tips to ensure you pick a healthy pet.
Choosing a Healthy Pet at an Animal Shelter
Make sure to choose a shelter that performs pet health screenings on all incoming cats and maintains a clean, sanitary environment. Some shelters may not have the time to determine a pet's background or keep cats in a clean environment. When you look for pets at animal shelters that follow this practice, you'll have a lower risk of bring home a cat with chronic health problems.
At the shelter, walk through the cat kennel area. If you find a cat you like, make sure to carefully look at the cat. The cat should have clear eyes with no discharge, clean ears with no red or brown discharge, and no visible lumps on his or her body. If the cat was recently spayed or neutered, you'll see shaved fur around the genitals. Otherwise the cat should have a shiny, fluffy coat with no bald patches.
Before you bring your new furry friend home, make sure you have properly prepared for all of your new cat’s needs. Ensure that you have items such as toys and litter box. Also, consider how much time you have to spend with your cat. Your cat will be happier and healthier if you plan ahead!
