Cat Dental Care
It is likely that your cat suffers from gum disease because on average only 15% of cats escape it. Ignoring periodontal disease can be dangerous. It can harm many of a pet’s organ systems including heart, liver, kidneys, lungs and brain.
Bacterial presence in your pet’s mouth can cause structural damage to gums and bone supporting the teeth. Fortunately, this injurious disease can easily be prevented. Periodontal disease begins when plaque causes an inflammation of the gum tissue. Dental tartar or calculus creates a rough surface for plaque to stick to. When the gums are pushed away from your pet’s teeth, the structure supporting them will fail and teeth will be lost.
When your cat shows signs of periodontal disease such as bad breath, loss of appetite, pawing at the face or one sided chewing you know that the time has come for a dental examination for your pet.
Dog Dental Care
Our Columbus Veterinarian Staff recommends the following dental care for your pet:
- Schedule a dental exam a soon as possible. If you see any of the above symptoms or suspect a problem, don't wait for your dog’s annual checkup.
- Provide your pet with dental care at home. Brush their teeth, apply dental rinse and offer your pet dental chews. Ask us for instructions on brushing your pet’s teeth.
- Schedule an annual teeth cleaning, with x-rays. This is will help to control disease early enough for effective treatment.
